Oh well. I don't know what to tell you. Vote for the lying philanderer if you want. The U.S. Congress needs another lying philanderer.
Okay, I screwed up last night. The election is for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District, because its Congressman was appointed (by the governor -- a job the world's most famous mountain trail hiker used to have) to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat.
The news today indicates the race will be a real tight squeaker. The district is historically heavily Republican -- they voted Romney in the 2012 presidential race.

Look -- I've lived through some supernasty crap in the USA, including race riots and being conscripted/drafted during (not IN ... whew!) the Vietnam War.
Democracy is not the Kiss From Heaven we like to advertise it as. Call me when the human heart is cured of corruption and greed, and I'll sing a happier hymn about the wonders of Democracy.
But at its stumbling, bumbling worst, it does wrest Power from a handful of violent men to ... well, the people, the ordinary citizens. If you flavor a fair election with a strong, independent judiciary -- well, you got something you can be proud of. We've had a few bright moments here in Yankland -- and about 225 years of uninterrupted power-torch-passing from party to party, with no coups or juntas.
Supercongratulations! Of course your ballot is secret -- but boy am I curious about whom you'll vote for in your boring Pakistani politics. (Try to stay awake.)

by the way, a crazy movie, "Joe Wilson's War", has some very nosy things to say about Pakistani politics, and its intersection with the USA's whacky politics. It's a drama, but based on the true story of the Texas congressman who, pretty much all my himself, decided to kick the Soviet Army out of Afghanistan.
I believe it was Charlie Wilson's War, noe Joe. And was a good film for sure, a lot of it was rhetoric and propaganda, a lot of it was true.
In any case,
Shit's hit the fan. Crazy voter turn out on Saturday. MQM caught rigging most of Karachi, to the point the ECP has called off and requested repolling in a lot of ridings.
Should be interesting how the next few weeks progress.
DOH yeah CHARLIE Wilson's War, glad ya saw it and found it interesting. (Been a bit stressed this week ... a beloved old car passed away without warning.)
been watching BBC TV coverage of the day after election day ... but we also get al-Jazeera (which used to be BBC Mideast) and their coverage of the PK election and aftermath ought to be more comprehensive.
What did Churchill say? Democracy is the worst possible form of government -- except for all the other kinds of government.
PK's achievement, of course, won't be this historic election. It will be if it can lead to a full decade, and then 2 decades of peaceful democratic transitions.
