Subject: [GeigerCounterEnthusiasts] re: Veterans Day / Remembrance Day / Armistice Day

A very fine Veterans Day and,
for those folks who served as Allies in the 20th and 21st Century's wars, a very fine Remembrance Day. bcer_eh calls it Armistice Day, and that's why it happens on 11.11 ... the 1918 Armistice on the European Western Front was signed on 11 November at 5 a.m. and both sides agreed to silence the guns 6 hours later -- on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

I had a trivial visit to the Emergency Room a couple of months ago. I was a little woozy while the clerk interrogated me, and when she asked if I was a veteran, I grunted yes. Then she said, "Thank you for your service."

I burst into a loud spasm of laughter.

When I got a grip I apologized and explained that, in 37 years, that was the first time anybody'd ever said that to me, and I was a little unprepared for it.

My war was not known for effusive national gratitude to its vets.

These modern public expressions of Thanks -- well, I acknowledge them as appropriate and sincere and certainly well-meaning.

But they're also Free and Easy. As, during these two ferocious US wars, they become our new national etiquette, they obligate my non-vet neighbors to do nothing.

I note that one candidate for US president just voted against a beefed-up educationally generous GI bill, apparently for what he felt were bona fide national security reasons. Scholarships for vets that were too generous, he explained, worked against our current need for troop strength retention -- soldiers would be tempted to become civilians again to go back to school.

Oddly enough, the candidate who was (very loudly) the war veteran and hero voted against the vets' assistance bill.

So if I want something from my civilian neighbors more than a Thank-You Card on Veterans Day, what do I want?

Also today received an e-mail announcing that my town's winter homeless shelter has reopened. My town has a small VA/DVA hospital, which was founded at the end of World War II specifically to treat combat-related neurological and psychiatric disorders.

So most nights at the church-alliance shelter, it's indistinguishable from an Old Vets Reunion. Vietnam vets were the cliche when we first opened our doors. But then Desert Storm guys started wandering in, every bit as shell-shocked and shaken as the Vietnam-era guys.

And this winter, to add to the tradition ...

So if you feel like Santa Claus and I'm sitting in your lap, here's what I'd like for Christmas beyond a patriotic Thank-You.

1. Stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as soon as possible, and bring my neighbors' sons and daughters in uniform home safe and speedily.

2. If you perceive your governments, federal, state, local, are doing less than they possibly could to heal our troops and military veterans, to provide them the finest medical care, and to successfully re-integrate them into our communities, pick up the phone, write e-mails, scream bloody murder, use harsh language -- whatever works. Make a loud jerk of yourself, just like I'm doing here.

3. Volunteer at my homeless shelter. Cook some food and break bread with our guests over supper.

I promise there'll be lots of vets there. And I promise your being there and chatting with them will mean a great deal to them.

Where is it? Well, do the best you can to find it. If you end up volunteering at the wrong homeless shelter, it's all good, as the teens say.

Without these necessary things, "Thank You For Serving" is a bit hollow, like the Welcome Home Military Band and Parade, it's the Chump Change of national gratitude -- cheap and temporary.

Throughout history, after all wars, vets are easy to forget and ignore. In "Tommy," Kipling notes that we treat soldiers and vets like dirt until there's a national crisis that scares everybody to death -- and requires a new batch of soldiers. We tend to love vets and soldiers and marines and sailors and airmen/airwomen most when we're scared out of our wits.

I'd dress up in my old uniform today, but I left it at my mom's apartment, and my nephews made a Halloween costume out of it. But everybody buy a poppy from a vet today.

And sincerely -- thanks for serving.

Bob

=====================

Tommy

by Rudyard Kipling

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:

O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.

Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;

While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

another brawl between monks at Tomb of Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem

Once again, monks
come to blows at
Church of Holy Sepulcher

by The Associated Press

Israeli police rushed into one of Christianity's holiest churches Sunday and arrested two clergyman after an argument between monks erupted into a brawl next to the site of Jesus' tomb.

The clash broke out between Armenian and Greek Orthodox monks in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, revered as the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

It began as Armenian clergymen marched in an annual procession commemorating the 4th-century discovery of the cross believed to have been used to crucify Jesus. It ended with the arrival of dozens of riot policemen who separated the sides, seizing a bearded Armenian monk in a red-and-pink robe and a black-clad Greek Orthodox monk with a bloody gash on his forehead. Both men were taken away in handcuffs.

Six Christian sects divide control of the ancient church. They regularly fight over turf and influence, and Israeli police are occasionally forced to intervene.

The feud revolves around a demand by the Greek Orthodox to post a monk inside the Edicule - the ancient structure built on what is believed to be the tomb of Jesus - during the Armenian procession. The Armenians refused, and when they tried to march the Greek Orthodox monks blocked their way.

"We were keeping resistance so that the procession could not pass through ... and establish a right that they don't have," said a young Greek Orthodox monk with a cut next to his left eye. The monk, who gave his name as Serafim, said he sustained the wound when an Armenian punched him from behind and broke his glasses.

Father Pakrat of the Armenian Patriarchate said the Greek demand was against the status quo arrangement and against the internal arrangement of the Holy Sepulcher. He said the Greeks attacked first.

Archbishop Aristarchos, the chief secretary of the Greek Orthodox patriarchate, said his monks had not initiated the violence. "I'm sorry that these events happened in front of the Holy Sepulcher, which is the most holy religious monument of Christianity," he said.

After the brawl, the church was crowded with Israeli police holding assault rifles and equipped with riot gear, standing beside Golgotha, where Jesus is believed to have been crucified, and the long smooth stone marking the place where tradition holds his body was laid out.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police were forced to intervene after fighting was reported. They arrested two monks, one from each side, he said.

The feud is only one of a bewildering array of rivalries among churchmen in the Holy Sepulcher.

The Israeli government has long wanted to build a fire exit in the church, which regularly fills with thousands of pilgrims and has only one main door, but the plan is on hold because the sects cannot agree where the exit will be built. In another example, a ladder placed on a ledge over the entrance sometime in the 19th century has remained there ever since because of a dispute over who has the authority to take it down. More recently, a spat between Ethiopian and Coptic Christians is delaying badly needed renovations to a rooftop monastery that engineers say could collapse.

Control of the ancient church is divided between six Christian sects. They regularly fight over turf and influence, and Israeli police are occasionally forced to intervene.

The fight is part of a growing rivalry over religious rights at the church.

On Palm Sunday earlier this year, dozens of Greek and Armenian priests and worshippers exchanged blows at the very site and pummeled police with palm fronds when they tried to break up the brawl.

The red flower of the poppy (Papaver somniferens / sleep-bringing poppy) is the symbol of veterans of the United States and the UK and Commonwealth militaries, and has been since World War One. Veterans sell poppies everywhere in advance of Veterans Day in the USA and Remembrance Day in the UK and Commonwealth nations.

The Armistice which ended fighting on the Western Front in 1918 was signed at 5 a.m. on 11 November, and provided that both sides would cease hostilities 6 hours later. Thus the guns fell silent on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

In Europe, men of the most civilized, cultured and religious civilizations stopped machine-gunning and bayonetting each other and bombarding each other with high explosives and drifting clouds of poison chlorine and mustard gas. It was the first war to pit waves of charging footsoldiers against the recently perfected machine gun. This machine had been invented in 1882 by the Anglo-American Hiram Stevens Maxim, later knighted, who believed that such an unimaginably lethal weapon would end land warfare altogether; no nation would intentionally order its young men to charge into the teeth of such weapons.

The poppy quickly became the symbol of English-speaking veterans after the publication, in 1915, of this poem by a Canadian Army medical officer, written after the death during one of the battles of Ypres of his young soldier friend. Ypres is in the Flanders region of Belgium. The poem was first published anonymously in Punch.

In Flanders Fields

by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry: Janvier, the feast of exchanging gifts

Agence-Vleeptron Presse has received a six-star review of the 15th century illuminated manuscript Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry, and is pleased to present another page.

The artists who created this book over the course of a century seem to have been Flemish and Dutch.

This is a depiction -- in gorgeous detail -- of a party for nobility to exchange gifts in January. This is how they dressed, this is what they ate, this is what the hall looked like. A magnificent hunting dog is evident, but I'm not sure what animals are eating on the table -- cats? Stoats? Perhaps they are a common household mammal or miniature dog breed from the 1400s which has subsequently gone extinct.

Note the Zodiac constellations Capricorn the Goat and Aquarius the Water-Bearer. This would be as meaningful to designate the season of this festival as a calendar is to us.

Below, either a military parade (no actual injury or violence is depicted, just some patriotic blustering), tournament, or a war. If anyone recognizes the battle standards or the eagle and lion emblems on the shields, please Leave A Comment. The
fleur-de-lys (lily or iris) is the emblem of the French royal house of Bourbon; the ducs de Berry were usually brothers of the King.

I don't know the meaning of the swans or really any of the heraldry. The dynastic and regional names to watch for are Berry, Auvergne, Poitiers, Montpensier, Luxemburg, Anjou, Naples and Burgundy. Leave A Lot Of Comments.

I think the fellow with the big knife is diving enthusiastically into a platter of squabs or game birds -- pheasants, quail. The best cooking in the nation or in Europe became an important lure to maintain powerful and influential courts -- castles with lots of rich and powerful people who loved to stay there because the place was well-heated in winter and food was plentiful and delicious; they would do much for the King and Queen or Duke and Duchess who invited them to spend the winter at the castle.

Henry VIII (who was, coincidentally, very fond of eating) made a huge investment in making his English court known as the best and most popular cuisine in all Europe -- specifically trying to steal the thunder of the French, German, Italian and Spanish courts. Frivolous as it sounds, these were important political initiatives in peacetime, which paid dividends of alliances in war. Princesses may not have had much say in whom they were married to, but they were not shy about expressing their preferences for warm castles with plenty of delicious food and lots of fancy parties with hot music. This was around the time of Europe's Little Ice Age, when Central Heating was invented.

Revelation / die Offenbarung des Johannes / what God is holding in His right hand

Click for larger.

I hope everyone will forgive me for not knowing what God was holding in His right hand in William Blake's depiction of God on His throne. The seven red thingamabobs should have been the tipoff. It's the Book with Seven Seals.

Young Huckleberry Finnstein actually had to learn to read the Book of Genesis (b'Raysheet = "In the Beginning") in Hebrew, but alas Huck's familiarity with the New Testament, in any lingo, is flimsy. It's probably better than some folks who check

[X] Christian

on surveys or military dog tags, but it's still pretty pathetic.

The only thing that saves me from complete and abysmal ignorance of the New Testament is my fervent admiration for the King James English translation of the Bible, which, with John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress" and the plays of William Shakespeare, I regard as the High Moment of the English language for beauty and power.

Martin Luther's German translation of the Bible was really the cannon that exploded the Protestant Reformation in continental Europe. The Catholic Church had forbidden and suppressed translations of the Bible into modern common languages, a central tool for keeping the central document of Christianity the exclusive province of the Catholic priesthood and hierarchy. French speakers, German speakers, English speakers, Dutch speakers were forbidden from reading the Bible as easily as they could read government proclamations or advertisements for barrels of salted codfish. Only priests, with their special knowledge of Latin, could read -- and interpret -- the Bible. Until Luther, this was not a book for common men and women to read and understand.

These translations into modern European languages also transformed these "everyday" languages into great powerhouses of culture, literature and national pride. Speaking and writing in these standardized models of German, English, Dutch suddenly acquired a pride and prestige that reflected the holy wisdom of Christianity. After these translations were printed and circulated, there was no going back to a single interpretation of the truths and beliefs of Christianity. Any educated man (and a handful of women) could try to comprehend Christianity for himself. The monopoly on Christian doctrine was forever shattered.

DIE OFFENBARUNG DES JOHANNES

4. Kapitel

[5.11] Und ich sah, und ich hörte eine Stimme vieler Engel um den Thron und um die Gestalten und um die Ältesten her, und ihre Zahl war vieltausendmal tausend;

Revelation

Chapter 4

[1] After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

[2] And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

[3] And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

[4] And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

[5] And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

[6] And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

[7] And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.

[8] And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

[9] And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

[10] The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

[11] Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Chapter 5

[1] And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

[2] And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?

[3] And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.

[4] And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.

[5] And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

[6] And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

[7] And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

[8] And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

[9] And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

[10] And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

[11] And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;

[12] Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

[13] And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

[14] And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

WINTERBERRY FARM
IN LEVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS

INVITES YOU TO A
SHEARING & FELTING & FIBER DAY

Saturday 8 November 2008
9 am - 4 pm

Most of our sheep are shorn in March, but we have some unusual wethers who need to be shorn twice a year. So we’ll be shearing them and several of the lambs with exceptional fleeces. So it’s a great time of year to demonstrate some of the wonderful things that can be made from wool.

The day’s schedule:

9:30 Making flat (wet) felt -- & try it yourself!
10:00 Spinning sheep wool & spinning angora (rabbit) -- spindles & wheel
10:30 Needle felting
11:00 Shearing the sheep (Andy Rice, our shearer is pretty fast- this will take maybe an hour!)
12:00 Border collies herding ducks
12:30 Skirting shorn fleece
1:00 Weaving
2:00 Making felt balls
2:30 Spinning again
3:00 Needle felting again
3:30 Weaving again

Demonstrations will run for about 15 minutes.

Lots of fiber will be displayed and available for sale- raw, washed, gorgeously dyed, dyed and carded ... even some spun accent skeins of crazy yarn. Felting kits, fiber batches large enough for a project or small enough for a child’s play. And farm animals (sheep, goats, angora rabbits, pigs, ducks, geese, guineas, turkeys & chickens) can be greeted all day. No admission charge!

So come to 21 Teawaddle Hill Road in Leverett and join in the fun!

(For directions, go to our website www.winterberryfarm.org )

Winterberry Farm is a small family teaching farm. We offer farm and fiber programs for families, for kids and for adults; we provide a place where people of different faiths -- and people seeking faith -- can reflect upon and share their call to care for the earth.

Here's what God looks like

You should certainly click to make this larger.

Okay, here's what God looks like.

And where do you get that except Vleeptron?

Note immediately God is a He. About 12 years ago in my town, Northampton Massachusetts USA, we awoke on Easter Sunday to find a huge painted graffito on the Catholic Church across the street from the all-women Smith College:

SHE IS RISEN

I don't think the miscreant or miscreants were ever apprehended. What crime would they have been charged with?

I don't know what that thing is in God's right hand. If you know, please Leave A Comment. Nor do I know which particular Bible passage Blake is illustrating. Leave A Comment.

The question of God's gender raises the most fundamental issues of Entitlement. If God is indeed a male, that certainly is a strong indication that females are somewhat 2nd-class creations of God, and probably should have limited rights and privileges.

This also harkens to a major historical transition. People in huge swaths of Eurasia and Africa used to worship The Big Mother in a variety of names, all usually with big hips and large breasts. The ancients were not dummies. They understood males, and their amazing organs, were involved in Life in some significant but vague and fairly brief way.

But every human being grew inside and came out of a woman's womb, and likewise did all sheep and rams, and cows and bulls, and even things that hatched from eggs came from females. Then all mammals need mother's milk to survive infancy.

Obviously the Big Part of Life -- and the people we should be most grateful to for being Alive, and for having meat on the table, and wool sweaters -- were the females. At every birth, the whole show is about Her. Sometimes they can't even reach Him on the cell phone, he's busy at the office, or nobody even knows who he is.

Regular Vleeptron subscribers may have noticed I like William Blake a lot. Like Glenn Gould, we Earthies had no right to expect anyone like this would ever come along and do things like the things he did.

I hope when we send our radio messages and gold DVDs in space probes, we toss in some of Blake's poetry and lots of his startling and astonishing images. The Sentients out there deserve William Blake every bit as much as they deserve Mozart and Chuck Berry. Perhaps this is the last century in which we will even be able to send postcards and souvenirs of who we were and the good things we did.

But anyway, there's always all this talk about God, there's no escaping it. Blake believed he knew what God looks like, he believed he had seen and dreamed God, and left a lot of watercolors and engravings. Of course many religions and denominations who believe in God strictly forbid any visual or sculptural depiction of Him, and call all such idolotry.

Blake was -- to put it mildly -- a Non-Conformist though a deeply religious man (possibly with a bit of Swedenborgian thrown in).

If you read about Blake, you'll get the sense that he had a rough, hard-scrabble, difficult life, a series of regular rejections and insufficient wages. But that misses the point. As Babette explained to her guests after blowing all her Lottery winings on her Feast:

An artist is never poor.

One Of Us

Artist: Prince
Album: Emancipation

Words, music by Eric Bazilian

(We didn't write this song, but listen)

If God had a name, what would it be
And would we call it 2 His face
If we were faced with Him and all His glory?
What would U ask if U had just one question?

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

CHORUS:

What if God was one of us?
Just a slave like one of us?
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' 2 make His way home

If God had a face, what would it look like
And would U wanna see it
If seeing meant that U would have 2 believe in things like heaven
And Jesus and the saints and all the prophets?

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

CHORUS

Yeah

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob (slave) like one of us?
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' 2 make His way home

Like a holy rollin' stone
Back up 2 heaven all alone
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept 4 the Pope maybe in Rome
But He ain't home, He aint home, He ain't home!
No, no, no, He ain't home!
No, no, no, He ain't home!
Oh yeah, oh!

What if God was one us?
What if God was one us?
What if God was one us?
What if God was one us?

Strains Between McCain
and Palin Aides Go Public

Report: Palin's Wardrobe
Is to Be Audited by GOP

by KATE SNOW

Thursday 6 November 2008 —- Now that the defeated team of Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin have gone their separate ways, the knives are out and Palin is the one who is getting filleted.

Revelations from anonymous critics from within the McCain-Palin campaign suggest a number of complaints about the Alaskan governor:

Fox News reports that Palin didn't know Africa was a continent and did not know the member nations of the North American Free Trade Agreement -- the United States, Mexico and Canada -- when she was picked for vice president.

The New York Times reports that McCain aides were outraged when Palin staffers scheduled her to speak with French President Nicholas Sarkozy, a conversation that turned out to be a radio station prank.

Newsweek reports that Palin spent far more than the previously reported U$150,000 on clothes for herself and her family.

Several publications say she irked the McCain campaign by asking to make her own concession speech on election night.

The tension is likely to continue or get worse. Lawyers for the Republican National Committee are heading to Alaska to try to account for all the money that was spent on clothing, jewelry and luggage, according to The New York Times.

Reports of agitation between the two camps bubbled up in the final weeks of the campaign as Barack Obama began pulling away and the GOP duo was unable to regain the momentum.

But those reports are no longer in the rumor stage as McCain loyalists are now blasting away at the Alaska governor, who was a favorite of the Republican right during the campaign, but was cited in numerous polls as a reason why many Americans wouldn't vote for the Arizona Republican.

Perhaps the most dangerous allegation for Palin are reports in The New York Times and Newsweek that when she was urged by McCain adviser Nicole Wallace to buy three suits for the Republican convention and three suits for the campaign trail, she went on the now-infamous shopping spree at swank stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

A Republican donor who agreed to foot a majority of the expenses was stunned when he received the bill, Newsweek reported. Both the Times and Newsweek report that the budget for the clothing was expected to be between $20,000 and $25,000. Instead, the amount reported by the Republican National Committee was $150,000.

That wasn't the whole tab, however, according to Newsweek. The magazine claims that Palin leaned on some low-level staffers to put thousands of dollars of additional purchases on their credit cards. The national committee and McCain became aware of the extra expenditures, including clothes for husband Todd Palin, when the staffers sought reimbursement, Newsweek reported.

McCain Aide Calls Palin Family 'Wasilla Hillbillies'

There is one comment in particular from a McCain aide that guaranteed to heighten friction between the two camps. The angry aide described the Palin family shopping spree to Newsweek as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast."

It's unclear how much McCain knew about the clothing debacle. Reports suggest that he was kept out of the loop for fear that he would not approve.

Both Newsweek and The New York Times say McCain and Palin had little contact with each other.

"I think it was a difficult relationship," one top McCain official confided to The New York Times. But a high level McCain adviser told ABC News that the two had a good working relationship.

"He likes her," this senior McCain adviser said last week. "He's had no problem with her. He's very appreciative of what she's done."

The adviser said McCain and Palin talked at least once a day. He also said McCain frequently joked about how large Palin's crowds were compared to his.

However, press accounts today suggest that Palin rubbed many of the McCain aides the wrong way. On election night when it was clear that McCain would be giving a concession speech instead of an acceptance speech, Palin approached McCain with a speech in hand hoping to make her own concession speech, according to published reports.

Vice presidential candidates traditionally leave the spotlight to the top of the ticket on election night and McCain aides made it clear to Palin that she would be a spectator that night, not a speaker, The New York Times reported.

And when McCain and Palin split up in Arizona Wednesday, the personal differences were stark.

McCain drove himself home in a Toyota sport utility vehicle. Palin's departure was a grander event. She left with an entourage of 18 family members and friends and a Secret Service detail, heading to the airport in a motorcade stretching more than a dozen vehicles, flanked by a dozen more cops on motorcycles.

Interview Prep Lacking, McCain Staffers Say

McCain aides had numerous complaints about Palin. She was unwilling or unable to find the time and energy to prep for her disastrous interview with Couric. And when she did study, she astonished her handlers by her unsophisticated views.

She didn't know Africa was a continent, according to Newsweek. Fox News revealed that during her cramming, she couldn't name the three countries that belong to the North American Free Trade Agreement: the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Questions followed Palin home to Alaska. She was asked about some of the accusations from anonymous sources when she landed there late Wednesday.

Asked about the Fox report that she did not know the NAFTA members or that Africa was a continent, Palin said, "If they're an unnamed source, that says it all. I won't comment on anyone's gossip based on anonymous sources. That's kind of a small of a bitter type of person who anonymously would charge that I didn't know an answer to a question. So until I know who's talking about it, I won't have a comment on a false allegation."

Palin Insists She's No Diva

When pressed on what went wrong with the campaign, she said, "I certainly am not one to ever waste time looking backwards."

She defended herself against the notion that she is to blame for the failure of the McCain-Palin ticket.

"I don't think anybody should give Sarah Palin that much credit, that I would trump an economic, woeful time in this nation that occurred about two months ago, that my presence on the ticket would trump the economic crisis that America found itself in a couple of months ago and attribute John McCain's loss to me," Palin told reporters in Arizona Wednesday.

"Now, having said that, if I cost John McCain even one vote, I'm sorry about that because John McCain I believe is the American hero. I had believed that it was his time. & He being so full of courage and wisdom and experience, that valor he just embodies, I believe he would've been the best pick, but that is not the Americans' choice at this time."

She also rejected the characterization that she was a "diva" on the campaign trail, as one anonymous McCain adviser told CNN.

"If only people, y'know, come on up and travel with us to Alaska and see this 'diva' lifestyle that I supposedly live or would demand, because it's just false," she said.

Asked about her national political ambitions, she said, "I have not given it any thought in the context of making any kind of decisions at all, so no, just happy to be back here."

In one of her favorite coffee shops in Wasilla Tuesday morning, Palin summed it up this way: "Forever, I'm going to be Sarah from Alaska."

Yesterday morning at 10:30 we drove
to Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School, where our polling place is. Inside it was busier than I've ever seen it, but there were no lines, we walked right up to our ward, got our ballots, went to our flimsy but adequately private booths, voted, and returned the completed ballots to the big noisy machine that sucks them into itself -- in and out within 15 minutes. What delay there was was because of a fairly complicated ballot with several voter questions on it.

The binding questions:

* Soon greyhound racing will be outlawed in Massachusetts. Good riddance, and I wish fine homes and better lives for these quite magnificent animals.

* Very soon, adult possession of small amounts of marijuana will no longer be a crime in Massachusetts, as it is now, with possible jail time and a lifelong permanent criminal record. Soon, a la Ann Arbor, Michigan and Berkeley, California, the police officer will write the miscreant a ticket, like a traffic ticket, you will pay a fine, and nothing will go on your permanent record. (Also The Daily Hampshire Gazette will stop publishing your name in the Trivial Crimes box.) Kids will no longer be denied college financial aid through federal education loans because they got caught smoking a joint. Professional licenses (law, medicine, etc.) will no longer be in jeopardy because of an old pot bust. YES passed statewide by the prophesied 70 percent. That's how much Massachusetts voters love criminal pot laws. I will let you know in six months if the world comes to an end.

* I voted to keep the state income tax, and so did most Massachusetts voters. If you're wondering why I voted to keep paying taxes, Leave A Comment.

We vote on a large paper ballot. To vote for a candidate or a question, you take a black felt pen and draw a line to connect a double-ended arrow:

FOR PRESIDENT:

GUS HALL
<==============>

According to the news, a lot of people in Florida had a lot of trouble with this system, and drew all kinds of screwy doodles in the wrong places. I don't care. It beats the shit out of electronic voting machines. I like a ballot you can touch, and store away for months or years, and then count again and examine at your leisure if any question should arise.

A ballot of magnetic zeroes and ones is just asking for trouble and tempting the weak impulse control of politicians and their groupies.

Elizabeth Dole was defeated
for her re-election to the United States Senate in North Carolina. I couldn't be happier. She is a skanky filthy vile snake who, in her desperation, pissed on the Finest Thing the USA ever had going for it -- religious tolerance. If you hire her to serve on your board of directors, I will stop buying whatever the fuck you're selling.

Michigan voters passed a law permitting stem cell research. I will take a wild guess that it will pop up first at or adjacent to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (GO BLUE!), which I finally had the pleasure of visiting a year ago. The Science of Tomorrow has always had a great home there, and it is lovely to know that important tradition will continue.

I guess Kerry got re-elected. I didn't vote against him. But neither did I vote for him. I didn't connect a double-ended arrow for him or the other guy. Kerry's just totally useless and always has been. Don't feel sorry for him, he married the heiress to Heinz Ketchup. If you can't stand him as much as I can't stand him, stop using Heinz Ketchup. There are other brands of ketchup or catsup.

S.W.M.B.O. seems as thoroughly thrilled with the election results as I am. A horrible time for Planet Earth and the United States of America will soon be over (20 January 2009 at noon, if you want to order party platters).

Barack Obama is, first and foremost, a professional politician, so I won't begin to suggest that within a year, all of our worst problems will be fixed.

But all he has to do to win my abiding affection and gratitude is a better job than the previous dumb asshole psycho illiterate fundie did for the last 8 years. That's not asking or expecting too much. Walk in the Park. The bar for Presidential Success is not exactly set very high right now.

People all over Planet Earth seem to be very happy
with the result of the USA presidential election. And obviously people all over the United States of America are very happy with the news that greeted them before East Coast dawn.

I could use some fucking Happiness.

My Countdown Keychain says Bush has

75 Days 10 Hours 50 Minutes

left in office. Then he has to move out of the White House and stop making Planet Earth sick.

Election Day USA

Copyright (c) 2008 by Ron Bizer

Okay, please forgive the unconscionable delay, but here is Vleeptron's Guide to USA Election 2008.

A cable documentary the other night claimed the 1828 campaign between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson was nastier than this one.

That can't possibly be true.

This sucker was without doubt the nastiest, most mean-spirited political campaign I can remember. I first voted in 1968, so I have crisp memories of the last 12 presidential elections. This one wins the Guinness World Record for ugliness and toxicity, hands down, no question about it. It makes Nixon and his henchcreeps look like elegant and dainty sportsmen and gentlemen.

Its endless spiral into the crapper of the human spirit has made me physically and emotionally ill, and invaded my sleep with nightmares.

I have for the past year or more witnessed the industrial-scale professional and amateur destruction of community and the polarization and paralysis of a nation and society which once was a fine thing.

Character assassination of the loopiest and most untrue nature has become the commonplace of our politics.

SPECIAL MENTION goes to the Fox News Channel, and particularly to its stars O'Reilly and Hannity, for smearing the campaign with racist fear-mongering lying excrement. Fox, of course, is the misbegotten toxic toad of Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes, and I wish them both an incurable skin disease which forces them to spend the rest of their pathetic lives lying in a bathtub of tepid oatmeal.

It very much pleases me that in a day or two, their worst nightmare will have become manifest and true. I will very much enjoy what happens to Fox News Channel over the next eight years.

SPECIAL MENTION also to Cable News Network (CNN), which has turned journalism and national reporting into an animated cartoon for 4-year-olds, including electronic slide-whistle music and thudding background percussion. I'm sure their twinkie young girl newsreaders will be narrowcasting the news topless in six or seven months, there is no gimmick so whorish or brain-dead that they will not enthusiastically embrace if it gets them a 1/2 point of audience share. I wish the brains behind CNN, starting with Ted Turner, the same incurable skin disease and lifelong bathtubs of tepid oatmeal.

If you have not already voted -- as many as a third of voters in states that offer early voting have already voted --

PRESIDENT: Barack Obama

Please don't vote for McCain and that psycho fruitloop Palin. Give Planet Earth a break. We can't take four more years of Bush's whack and anti-constitutional lawless policies and violent acts.

MASSACHUSETTS QUESTION 1: No
MASSACHUSETTS QUESTION 2: Yes

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The Dead CAN Vote!

A friend told me her husband's 92-year-old aunt voted early last week. Then, a few days ago, she returned home from the supermarket, and dropped dead.

The family telephoned the voting authority with their odd question. The voting authority told them the aunt's vote would count, and she would in no way be penalized or discriminated against for being dead.
