Carib Beer Prayer

(from Trinidad & Tobago)

Our lager,
Which art in Barrels,
Hallowed be thy Drink.
Thy cases come,
Drunk will be done,
At home as it is in Pelican (and Pier 1 and Anchorage and Base ... )
Give us this day our Foamy head,
And forgive us our Spillage,
As we forgive those who Spill us and upon us.
And lead us not into Incarceration,
But deliver us from Hangovers.
For thine is the Beer,
the froth, and the lager.
And may Carib be available for ever and ever,
Barmen.

S.W.M.B.O. was away on Sunday and I went grocery shopping. Then I stopped at the Alcoholitorium.

Both of us had been knocking back this delicious and wildly popular Carib beer in Sint Maarten, but now we were back in the Ice Age, and feeling blue, so I asked the Beer Boy if he had any Carib. He knew what it was, but alas after hunting in the back said the store didn't have any.

I think the healthy young women dressed (slightly) in Carib's colors are from Trinidad and were cheerleading the Trinidad cricket team during a match in South Africa. Carib is a major corporate sponsor of the biggest sports teams all over the islands.

Unless you count the ubiquitous lime wedges that always come with your Carib, there's no special Magic to this brew -- just a century or more of Excellence in Mitteleuropean lager brewing.

On a day when it's 34C / 94F, Carib is the perfect air-conditioner in a glass bottle. It's also the perfect accompaniement to Caribbean seafood dinner after the sun goes down and the stars come out and you're dining in an ocean breeze.

And it makes me think of all my favorite Caribbean islands -- the quiet Paradises, the jumpier ones where you get stabbed during a botched robbery. (The robber on my island wanted a woman's bling -- the contemporary phrase is

Give it up!

-- and her husband tried to protect her from danger.)

Barmen!

Wise up wise guy.

Patfromch could have told you all about why the beer is good even without the brown tits and certainly without the lime wedges:

"Gebraut nach dem Reinheitsgebot von 1516" is the magic formula. Einfach. Katholisch? Drink up.

Nicht war Pat?? Mitteleuropa...

That Reinheitsgebotonly goes for german beer. And german beer is like making love in a canoe....

Previous sunday we were just going to have one round of Carib beer, but the barmaid said if we paid in U.S. dollars, the minimum purchase was 20, so we ended up having three rounds. The Carib beer was good. Very light.

hey hi hi James --

That's a very fascinating little snapshot of Beer & International Currency Exchange Rates ...

WHERE DID IT HAPPEN? Which island? Which country? Which continent? Which ocean?

Got any good deals and nifty hotel recommendations in the Maldives or KL or Jakarta?

Anything in Port Moresby?
