Bob is impressed (like how the British Navy got volunteer sailors) to make a poster for the big book sale / and with a great big valise full of books to read where it's peaceful

"Lazy"

by Irving Berlin (1924)

I'm lazy, I wanna be lazy
I long to be out in the sun
with no work to be done

under that awning they call the sky
stretching and yawning
and let that wicked, wicked world go by

I wouldn't peep
in the deep tangled wildwood
counting sheep
'till I sleep like a child would

and with a great big valise full
of books to read where it's peaceful
While I'm killin' time
being lazy

A lot of the sailors on HMS Bounty were impressed -- they were minding their own business knocking back an honest pint at ye Anchor & Belaying Pin -- when a Press Gang stormed in and marched then down to the docks. Then they met their new boss, Captain Bligh.

In the version with Marlon Brando as Fletcher Christian, after the Mutiny, Brando takes to his (new upgraded) cabin and sinks into a paralytic depression. Finally his Tahitian sweetie-pie storms in and yells at him:

"In Tahiti we have saying: You Eat Life, Or Life Eat You!"

Oh I just LIKE this poster. Short, intelligent, everything you need to know reduced to the max as they say Looks like a page from a Shakespeare Folio. And the umbrella in the lower left is very nifty too ! Looks much better now than the first draft.

Because I can't draw tp save my life. the cartoons of the books are filched (from people who can draw). Don't tell S.W.M.B.O.

the font (also filched) is called Ancient Alphabet -- a modern re-creation of a font from the 17th and 18th century. It's not an ordinary computer font that I can just merrily type. I had to copy, paste, position and shrink and expand every goddam letter and punctuation mark -- a computer version of old-style Hot Lead typesetting. Lot of work ... but it produces a cachet, an aroma, a "look" of authenticity that computer fonts can't capture.

I'll never be an artist/Kunstler ... but maybe I can claim to be a competent typographer.

Yup but the people who will look at this poster don't have to know that. Isn't that he great thing about art ?

btw found a Shakespeare font
http://www.dafont.com/il-shake-fest.font

on the far right side is a download button, if your office thingy can handle TFF (TrueTYpe Fonts) files you are right as rain.
And there is also this one

Oh and one of the most famous typographs ever is from one of my countrymen...

Helvetica? This is the only type font I know that causes fistfights and is so reviled. A lot of people blame all the ills and sicknesses of the modern world on Helvetica. Punk artists love to sodomize Helvetica mercilessly.

Yeah, I do TFF. Danke!

There's a wonderful TFF computer font, very hard to find, beloved of real old newspaper people ... a font that looks like the keys of an old banged-up Remington or Smith-Corona manual typewriter -- all the letters bent, twisted, missing serafim ... it's great for writing kidnap ransom notes.

Yup, the Naked Lunch/Brazil/Se7en type. I used to learn typing on one of those old heavy bastards of a typewriter. I'll have a look around and see if I can find it. Might also be great for writing e-mails.

If it still ain't there lemme know

Yes I mean Helvetica. Seen on so many album covers and ads and what not it's not even funny. One of my mates is a learned typograph and she said she is sick of it but customers still want it. Hell, the Ssiss Broadcasting Corporation even made a documentary about this font (which is even available on DVD methinks

On American Public TV I saw an hour or longer documentary about Helvetica, maybe 1 or 2 years ago, and I don't think it was filched and translated from this Suisee documentary. It was American artists, critics griping about Helvetica Taking Over The Earth (and not giving much back in prettiness or value).

As I worked on newpapers and learned stuff in the Composing Room, I learned the names of their Saints and Gods -- Caslon, Bodoni, those fellows.

You mean this one ? Saw that one also
http://www.helveticafilm.com/

Now lemme think. Helvetica was used on the first album by the great Velvet Underground, Beatles White Album, Coke, Dole, Spin, Rolling Stone, the NYC Subway, BWW, Toyota, Lufthansa, Skype and the UNHCR and possibly Apple (but I am not sure about them) and contless others. Legend has it that an american graphic designer saw a postcard with the shape of CH that read Confoederatio Helvetica and he said that it's pretty weird to name a country after a font type...

btw Frutiger is also Swiss. There is a town in CH called Frutigen, the type font is named after its inventor though.
